Giving a gift as a group is a great idea for your holiday gift giving needs. Whether you are part of a work group, a school group, a church group, or just a group of friends that wants to get a gift for someone, being a part of a group increases the possibilities and ideas for holiday gifts. As a group, you have the option to be more creative with the type of gift you give. You also have the ability to get a more expensive gift (or at least spend more on the gift you give).

Be Inspi(red). This holiday, it is a good idea to give a gift through (Product) Red or other charitable organizations, including those that support cancer and others in need. The idea behind these types of gifts is that you are able to purchase a gift for your group to give during the holidays, as well as support a good cause. What better way to give a gift than to let a person know that his or her group cares about the well being of others during the holiday season.

Give a Gift Certificate. When done right, a holiday gift certificate can say more than, “we had no idea what else to give you.” The first step is to listen for ideas and clues about what your gift's recipient enjoys. Does your boss still rave about that post-holiday spa retreat she took four years ago, but has not found the time or money to go again? Has the leader of your church group asked about that great, new restaurant more than one time? Could your child's soccer coach use a gift certificate to stock up on well-worn equipment and such? One good idea, though, is to make certain that the value of the gift certificate that you give does not depreciate over time just because it has not been used. A $200 gift certificate given by your group that is only worth $150 six months later may lessen the amount of holiday cheer that is attached to it.

Create a holiday gift basket from the group. With a group, it may be hard for each person's personality to show through with just one gift idea per holiday. To beat this battle, make a holiday gift basket that everyone can contribute too. First, create a theme for your gift basket. It can be holiday based or it can be based on an interest or a hobby. Then, allow each person to contribute one gift. This is the best part because everyone gets to come up with an idea for the gift; and they get to give what they think is the perfect gift, but the gift is still from “the group.”

Go expensive. No one likes the idea of an expensive gift during the holidays. However, there are some people who deserve a little something extra. If you have a boss that everyone enjoys working with or a person in your group that everyone appreciates, then you have the opportunity to give a glamorous gift. Get them an expensive gift that they would never expect. Get them something memorable for the holiday. With more than one budget to work with, the idea is that everyone can contribute the same amount or the group can work on a sliding scale for the gift. The holiday season is one when people are most generous after all. So splurge on that nice bracelet, watch, or any gift that will make them radiate joy during the holiday (and hopefully all year long).

Holiday gift giving does not always have to be monetary-based, but it is a nice way to show appreciation for a leader or anyone else in your group that goes above and beyond for the group. Buy working with the ideas above, your group can be creative with the gift that they give this season, as well as give a gift that the recipient will enjoy.

After the spectacular results of Viagra for the sexual dysfunction for men it was no surprise that women were soon crying out, “where’s ours?” In response to this the Drug Companies began to pour billions of money into research to be the first to put the women’s version of a drug to help women attain sexual arousal and/or orgasm on the market. Unfortunately the results have not been as been a “one product fits all” for woman, as Viagra was for men, when it first hit the market. Now, after seven years after Viagra hit the market there are even a couple more drugs similar to Viagra that have come to the market for men but women are still waiting for their “wonder drug”. The good news is there is a lot of research being done in several areas of female sexuality and arousal. The bad news is the female arousal and orgasmic function is much more complicated then a man’s. When talking about a woman’s sexual dysfunction there are not only just the physical factor such as hormonal levels, blood flow, and proper stimulation. What researchers have found is that woman’s satisfaction can also be heavily influenced by stress, energy levels, mood, religion, preconceptions of sex, and even her genetic makeup……Ow, is this complicated or what?Well, ladies don’t throw in the towel just yet. There have been some clinical trials that have yielded some very interesting results. Increasing the hormone testosterone levels by small amounts by pill or preferably a patch (it delivers the hormone at a more constant and level dosage), using a mixture of estrogen and testosterone, topical warming lubricants that bring more blood to help engorge the area and decrease dryness can help, there is even research being done with a type of implanted nerve stimulator placed in the spinal column (not spinal nerve) found accidentally while treating another disorder that may be promising. All of these treatments are showing promise but none of them have proved to be the home run scientist were hoping for.To help you understand why it may prove useful to explain that defining sexual dysfunction in a woman isn’t as easy as in a man. In men if it doesn’t come up and go off….bingo, you have dysfunction. In women, it’s a totally different kettle of fish all together. Most women define sexual dysfunction in their life as a lack of desire which as I touched on earlier can be mental: stress (children, job, social issues, and religion issues), relationship issues, and even just lack of time. There are physical issues that can also interfere with desire such as high blood pressure, depression, autoimmune disorders, thyroid levels, to mention just a few. To add to this there is confusion as to what constitutes satisfying sexual relations. You could ask ten women what they would consider to be sexually fulfilling and get ten totally different answers. Women differ in whether they need one orgasm, many orgasms, or even any orgasm to consider sex fulfilling with their partner. If you have ever discussed what orgasms feel like with your women friends then you already know that each woman feels orgasms differently…..none of them are wrong, just different. Women have described their orgasm from feeling a tingle, to the other end of the spectrum, describing a mind blowing, no control over their body, convulsion/convulsions. There have been controversies over clitoris vs. G-spot vs. vaginal orgasms to the point it’s no wonder women are so confused. There are women who could take every physical cure-all in the world for her physical dysfunction but until she is able to work out the emotional and mental aspects of overcoming the mental challenges that are challenging her sex life there is no little blue pill that is going to overcome her difficulties. Putting all the blame of female sexual dysfunction on the female psyche, however, has long outgrown the time that women will put up with it. Research has already shown that there are many women who do have a sexual dysfunction that can be greatly improved by medical intervention. Will there be a little blue pill for woman…….it may not be blue…. but for some women, the answer is yes, and soon. Here are just a few that are already being tested and are ready for the market or soon will be hopefully: I want to insert here that they tested Viagra against the placebo effect (taking a sugar pill)…and found no differences in satisfaction in women…you’re not getting any real benefits by taking one of your partner’s Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra, but you are risking the same side effects.Eros: approved 2000 by FDA—a clitoral suction device that increases blood flow and lubrication is out on the market Intrinsa: testosterone patch from P&G (refused FDA approval until more long term research is done) but looks very promising in clinical trials.PT-141: nasal spray to increase blood flow and arousal by targeting the CNS (melanocortin agonist) not out yet LibiGe: testosterone gel Phase III clinical trials EstraVil: non-prescription herbal remedy that makes some pretty outlandish claims. This has NOT had to go through FDA approval or testing There are gels, creams, and herbal remedies on the market that claim to increase desire and sexual satisfaction. We all know that when a new problem comes to light that not only do drug companies scramble for the new market’s dollars. There is always a surplus of nonprescription over-the-counter remedies that flood the market that can make outlandish claims which are not regulated by the FDA for safety. Please keep this in mind before ingesting or using these products. The lubricating gels and warming gels are fine as long as that is all they are. It is important that you test spot them in a less “sensitive” area for sensitivity or allergic reaction first, especially the warming gels and gels with herbal/fragrences.

“But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you,” (Matthew 6:33).

Most of us are familiar with this important verse uttered by our Lord, and we as Christians will certainly agree with the sentiments expressed. Have we ever stopped to think, however, of the force of Jesus' statement, and why we must seek His kingdom first? Why must we seek His kingdom first in our lives?

Seeking the Kingdom as a child of God. Why do we, as Christians, need to seek the Kingdom first? The Kingdom must be first because its ruler is the source of all blessings that we have received (Hosea 2:8, Ephesians 1:3). God created this world in which we inhabit, and made all of the plants and animals upon it (Genesis 1-2). God has given us life and all opportunity for happiness and contenment in this life (Genesis 1:26-27, Matthew 6:30-32). Of the greatest spiritual consequence, nevertheless, is the gift of God's Son on our behalf that we may have the remission of sin and association with both God and with one another (John 3:16, 1 John 1:1-3, Hebrews 10:25). Since God is the author and source of all of these blessings, it is only right and proper that we seek Him and His will first so as to continue to be blessed in life. We have gained nothing by the work of our own hands alone; all we have in some way is a gift from God.

Seeking the Kingdom as a husband or wife. When God joins a man and a woman together in marriage, a covenant is established that is to reflect the covenant made between God and mankind through Christ Jesus (Ephesians 5:25-33). The husband is to have a role in the household parallel to that of Christ and the church: he is its head, he nourishes and cherishes his wife, and gives himself up for her. Likewise, the wife is to have the role parallel to that of the church, submitting herself to her husband and following his leadership. This God-ordained system only works when God is the focus of both husband and wife, and both the husband and wife first seek God and His righteousness, and then, by necessity, the needs of one another.

Seeking the Kingdom as a father or mother. We read in Ephesians 6:4 that the father is to raise his children in the “discipline and instruction of the Lord”; when we think about this verse, we often think in terms of teaching by mouth, either through lecture or advice, and study of the Bible. These aspects of instruction are important and must be done, yet a major aspect of discipline and instruction of children is living the life of the Christian yourself. Your children learn far more by what you do than from what you say. If you say how important it is to be a Christian, and yet your actions do not reflect that of a Christian, they will see that it really is not that important to you. The only way for you to be able to truly instruct your child to seek His kingdom first is for you as the parent to seek first His kingdom.

Seeking the Kingdom as a worker. It is very easy to get discouraged as an employee, doing the same tasks over and over without any overarching purpose. It is easy to fall into the trap of seeing one's work as futile and pointless since it may have little eternal consequence. We have been called upon, however, to work as for the Lord, and that by doing so we will gain the eternal reward of great significance (Ephesians 6:5-8). By keeping the Kingdom in view as primary, purpose in life can be found!

Seeking the Kingdom at work or at school. If we are going to be successful in seeking the Kingdom in these two venues of our lives, we are going to have to apply both parts of Romans 12:2. We first must make sure that we do not conform to the world– in this circumstance, not conform to general attitudes at work or at school. If our fellow employees have foul mouths and constantly speak of sinful and/or inappropriate topics, should we just go along with the crowd or do all we can to avoid such chatter? If we are called upon to perform some task that would violate our conscience as a Christian, will we stand up and choose God over men and trust in God or not make any waves? In the school environment, will we stand against the false teachings often presented and avoid those students who think drugs and sex are the way to go? We can begin doing well by not taking part in the works of darkness (Ephesians 5:11).

The second part is the transformation by the renewal of our minds (Romans 12:2). Do we make work the first priority in life or spiritual matters? Do we try to make sure that our employers know when we assemble with the brethren and take every available opportunity to be with the saints? Do we take opportunities in school or at work to speak of our faith to others? As long as we continue to stand firm in the first part and demonstrating our faith by our works of righteousness, such will lead to discussions and will lead to opportunities for us to tell others of our faith. Will we take these opportunities or show that we are ashamed of the Gospel (Romans 1:16-17)?

Seeking the Kingdom in the home. In our last edition we demonstrated that no matter what a parent says when it comes to how important spiritual things are, children learn by the actions of the parent. Are our words matching your actions? What do we think we are teaching our children if we say that spiritual things are important but then will choose sports, family events, the “sniffles”, and a host of other events over assembling with the saints? We teach our child that sports, family, etc. are more important than spiritual things, and the consequences may last a long time. Likewise, do we seek out other opportunities to be with the brethren? Do our children have the feeling that the church is a part of their family? Do they see us helping those who are in need, both within and without the fold, and making good spiritual decisions in life? Children will follow their parents: what will they be following when they follow us? Proverbs 22:6 establishes that if you teach your child the way they should go, they will not depart from it when they are old. What are you teaching them?

We have spent some time looking into Matthew 6:33 and how to apply this important message in our lives. We must seek the Kingdom of Heaven by faith and have every confidence that when we trust in God, He will take care of us. God has been faithful; let us be faithful to Him!

The fact that the dietary habits of mothers can impact the future health of their unborn children is no longer seriously doubted. Beginning with the first reports conclusively linking a reduced maternal intake of the B-complex vitamin folic acid with a higher incidence of neural tube defects (Yen et al, 1992), dietary habits of the expectant mother have been shown to cause other health concerns in the newborn (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Low Birth Weight/Preterm Labor among women who smoke during pregnancy, etc.).

Recently, several studies have appeared in the medical literature that further emphasize the importance of proper prenatal diet and other factors that may be of benefit in reducing the incidence of serious, long term pediatric health problems.

The most alarming of these studies appeared in the August, 2006 issue of the Archives of Disease in Childhood in which Karen Linnert and associates demonstrate an apparent link between preterm delivery, low birth weight, and the hyperkinetic disorders.

In this study, 834 clinically confirmed cases of hyperkinetic disorder in children were compared to 20,100 age-matched controls that were enrolled in the Danish Psychiatric Registry. The investigators found that children born between 34-36 weeks gestation had nearly twice the risk of hyperkinetic disorder, while those born before 34 weeks gestation had nearly triple the risk.

Infants born at term with birth weights between 1500-2499 demonstrated a 90% increased risk of hyperkinetic disorder. Those with birth weights between 2500-2999 grams had a 50% increased risk compared with normal weight infants born at term.

Although the study investigated relative risk only and did not pose an explanation for the findings, several reviewers were of the opinion that the relative vulnerability of the “dopamine axis” may be at least part of the explanation for the findings reported.

Another recently study by Graham Devereuax and colleagues at the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom) suggests that there may be a link between low maternal intake of vitamin E and the presence of asthma in their children at 5 years of age.

This study is actually an extension of a previously reported evaluation of the relationship between maternal ingestion of antioxidants (vitamins C and E) and trace elements (copper, selenium, magnesium) and the presence of wheezing in the absence of “colds.” The initial report found that reduced Vitamin E consumption correlated with a higher incidence of asthma symptoms at 2 years of age and further that the frequency of asthmatic symptoms was not lowered by the child's intake of any of these substances.

The more recent report is a continuation of the previously published report except that it demonstrates that the findings previously reported at 2 years of age seem to persist in children that are reexamined at 5 years. As in the first study, maternal vitamin E consumption appears to be the only variable that reduces the reported incidence of asthma symptoms. Both studies failed to demonstrate evidence that antioxidant and trace mineral consumption by the child had any effect on the underlying disease.

Comment

The results of the investigations mentioned above confirm what should be common knowledge (if not common sense): actions of the mother in the prenatal period will, more often that not, eventually have an impact of their child's health. These reports are in no way to be considered as all-inclusive simply because the medical literature seems to contain more and more reports of possible beneficial or harmful effects from a wide variety of substances. The operative word here is, of course, possible.

As is often the case with initial studies, these reports are based on relatively small populations drawn from relatively small areas. This may mean that the studies reported may either overestimate or underestimate the incidence of the disease being studied and/or the causal relationships put forth as possible contributing factors.

A second point that must be stressed is that can does not transliterate to will and that possible in not a synonym for always. The history of medicine clearly demonstrates that most “revolutionary” results will either be moderated by further research if not totally discredited.

The moral of the previous 2 paragraphs is this: take all that you read with several grains of salt. Do not “hop on the bandwagon” of some new treatment or newly identified cause of some condition. And above all, never use incomplete or untested theories as an excuse for your own irresponsibility.

If your child has been diagnosed with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), then you know how frustrating it can be. Between medicines and therapy and teachers calling about behavior, ADD can leave parents in a world of hurt, not sure where to go or what to do.

Essentially, ADD affects a person’s ability to concentrate. Their mind wanders constantly, and it is hard for them to focus on tasks that don’t interest them. Often, they have no trouble with hobbies or interests that keep them occupied, but when sitting in class, for instance, they might not be able to stay focused on the lesson.

Behavioral problems are often associated with ADD because children with the disorder act out when they get frustrated. Trying to do math homework, for example, might be next-to-impossible because they don’t enjoy the subject and it requires acute concentration. When they get frustrated, they might yell or throw tantrums or refuse to complete the assignment.

ADD is not significantly debilitating to have special classes for students, but regular learning techniques do not always work. Teachers who aren’t trained in ADD and who don’t understand the effects of the disorder will just assume that the student has a behavior problem, which couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Many parents resort to medication like Ridalin and Attoral, which I think are more detrimental than beneficial. Given the smallest discrepency in dosage, these drugs can drain your child of personality and render him or her almost incapable of functioning in a normal capacity. They might become listless, and want to sleep all the time. They will lose interest even in those things that they used to love.

My advice, as always, is to get to the root of the problem. ADD affects the ability to concentrate, so help your child to concentrate.

First, try teaching word association tricks. If your child needs to memorize something for class, show him or her how to make it exciting. This will focus them on something other than just regular memorization, and might allow them to overcome their ADD (not permanently, but for this assignment).

I also recommend hiring a tutor for your child, and be sure to find someone who has experience with kids who are troubled by ADD. Let the tutor work with your child two or three days every week to be sure that schoolwork is completed and that concepts are understood. That way, if your child misses something in class, they can always work on it with their tutor.

It is important that you play an active roll in your child’s development. Keep on top off his or her progress at school, and talk with teachers if necessary. If there is a problem with a particular subject, then have his or her tutor concentrate on that for a few weeks until your child catches up.

In case your doctor hasn’t emphasized it enough, ADD is not a ‘mental disorder.’ It doesn’t mean that your child is retarded or slow or even incapable of learning as much as any other child. ADD is a learning disorder that impairs the brain’s ability to concentrate, as I said at the beginning. And just with all learning disorders, there are ways around the problem.

You should also remember to be your child’s “defender.” If teachers, principals, or other adults make disparaging remarks about children with ADD, take it upon yourself to educate them. Ignorance about the subject is a common source for depression among children with the disorder, and people who are involved with children should know what they are talking about and be educated on the subject.

You might also want to get involved with other parents who have children with ADD. There is nothing like a support group to keep you motivated and positive, and you can share ideas with one another that everyone may not have already considered. Keeping yourself under control and not letting stress get to you will greatly improve your relationship with your child, and your positivity will rub off on those who have the disorder.

And finally, if you have other children who do not have ADD, make sure that they understand what it is so that they don’t become frustrated as well. It can be tough for siblings to understand why their brother or sister has difficulty in school, and you want to eliminate the possibility of teasing and cruelty among siblings.

Diets can be difficult to follow. In addition, how do you choose which diet is right for your body? Slimming down naturally is not really a diet but a new way of approaching your eating habits. Here are some tricks to help with slimming down naturally instead of diets.

Diets Slimming Down Naturally Tip #1: Eat More

Diets can be difficult on the body because people focus on less food consumption. The body realizes that fewer calories are coming into the body and it goes into starvation mode. Starvation mode is when the body slows down the metabolism and stores food and calories.

Focus on obtaining carbohydrates in your diet through whole grain breads, rice and cereals. Combine lean protein and low fat foods such as fish and chicken into meals. This will help you to slim down naturally.

Diets Slimming Down Naturally Tip #2: Eat Yummy Foods

Stop trying to eat all those nasty foods on the diet that you do not like. What is the point of eating something you hate when there are so many foods to select from that fit healthy carbohydrates, produce and lean proteins? There is no reason to suffer through foods you hate because they are listed on the food choice for a diet that you chose.

For those veggies that you do not like try to hide them in soups, salads, casseroles or whole grain pasta dishes.

Diets Slimming Down Naturally Tip #3: Make Meals with Lots of Flavor

To satisfy our hunger needs throughout the day we need to satisfy all six tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, pungent and astringent. If we can do all these flavors in one meal, we will naturally feel less hungry. In addition, food cravings will decrease by having foods that are mixed up with flavors.

Diets Slimming Down Naturally Tip #4: Eat for Upcoming Activity Level

When deciding what to eat and how much to eat think about how active you are going to be in the next three hours. If you are going to the gym or out walking, you will want to consume more whole grain carbohydrates. If you are going to be sitting at a desk working, you will want to consume more lean protein or fiber from fruits.

Thinking ahead to activity level helps you to slim down naturally because you are adjusting your food intake according to each day instead of following a list of foods required by a particular diet plan.

Diets Slimming Down Naturally Tip #5: Be Picky about Food

Too often money is splurged on clothing, entertainment, or pc products. Instead of splurging on those items, be picky about the foods bought at the grocery store. Buy foods that are high quality. These fill us up more naturally.

The Fox Network's hit 24 is widely acclaimed as the best action drama on TV. Telling it's pulse-quickening stories in “real time” Fox's 24 stars Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, a whatever-it-takes counter-terrorism expert, and co-stars Carlos Bernard, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Kim Raver as his spy network colleagues and personal allies.

With the ticking clock literally and figuratively haunting the series, 24 has won the Fox Network prestige, awards and, each season, growing TV ratings. With it's non-stop action, ever-rising tension, and unbelievable plot twists, including the jaw-dropping deaths of many leading characters, 24 is in a class by itself.

Created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochrane, 24 each season tells the story of Jack Bauer's race against time. Each season, Bauer and the CTU (Counter Terrorism Unit) must quash a devastating threat to national security. It may be a virus, a nuke, an assassination plot. Each episode, save the season premiere, represents one hour of a “real time” day in Bauer's life. Fans never know what's coming on 24, hour to hour, episode to episode, as the tension builds to a boiling point fueled by car chases, shoot-outs, kidnappings, explosions, murders, and betrayals.

As Bauer, Sutherland, 2006 SAG Award winner for best lead actor in TV, proves his worth in every episode. Despite the run-and-gun nature of 24, he's asked to play a range of emotions and roles: the worried father, the stoic soldier who faces death, the grim torturer, the pained beat-down victim, the relieved agent who's done his job. His charisma and intensity fire up every scene.

While the Fox drama has occasionally been criticized for having some weak supporting roles, it's also been praised for filling the show with very strong ones. Along with Almeida (Bernard) and Chloe (Rajskub) other 24 stalwarts have included Michelle Dessler (Reiko Alyseworth) Almeida's wife and colleague and Dennis Haysbert as President Palmer, Bauer's boss. Elisha Cuthbert spent several seasons playing Jack's daughter, Kim, who briefly worked for the CTU.

Villains have a special place on 24. Penny Johnson Jerald was standout for several seasons as Palmer's Lady MacBeth-like wife, Sherry. Jack's terrorist adversaries have included crime lords, Serbian assassins and Middle Eastern terrorists brought to TV life by actors like Dennis Hopper, Tony-nominee Zeljko Ivanek and Oscar-nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo. Of course the ultimate 24 villain is Nina Meyers (Sarah Clarke) who, well, rent season 1, and see for yourself…

As momentum is important on this show, the Fox network has begun airing 24 at the mid-season mark, so it doesn't have to interrupt the flow. In past season, 24 has interrupted its own flow sometimes with sideplots that are too drawn out and on occasion, all the amazing action of the show can really force a suspension of disbelief. But overall every second is made to count on 24. It's one of the best shows on TV.

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.

“Say Hola to Spanish” by Susan Middleton Elya, has what seems like a thousand pictures that get the message across clearly. While it is technically a children’s picture book, written in rhyme, it is fun and interesting enough to teach people of any age 70 useful and easy to learn Spanish words.

I recommend this book to anyone whose child of almost any age wants to start learning Spanish. (My kids are age 10 & 12, and they thought my approach was fun, see below) It is a good introductory book that helps one realize many of the similarities between English and Spanish. For example, the following line, “A dog is a perro, a cat is a gato, you drink from a vasso, and eat from a plato.” When these Spanish words are pronounced properly, you will see that cat, vase, and plate are pronounced very similarly in Spanish. Likewise, the reader will learn that many words that they thought were English words are actually Spanish words. For example, “In English and Spanish, a burrito’s a burrito, a pinata’s a piñata, and a mosquito’s a mosquito.

Even when the Spanish-English translation is not obvious, the illustrations in the book, done by Loretta Lopez, help the reader to fill in the blanks. In the line, “Bread is called pan, and chesses are quesos… That’s what we eat, butt perros eat huesos” is illustrated by a dog being handed a bone while a family eats bread and cheese.

So can you really teach Spanish using “Say Hola to Spanish?”

Yes, you can really Spanish using “Say Hola to Spanish”. Here are some tips to help you.

1. Day one, read the book aloud to your child(ren).

2. Day two read the book again and have the children try to say it along with your from memory… or at least finish the
sentences.

3. Day three, use the words in the back of the book to test how many words they retained after reading the book for the third time.

4. Day four, make concentration cards using the Spanish and English translations of the 70 words used in the book. You can use the glossary found on the last page of the book.

5. Day five, create a Spanish test on paper or verbal and you will see just how much Spanish they have retained.

Many literary professors will tell you that the best way to write correctly is to write as though you were speaking. But if you sometimes utter sentences like, “Get me them sausages on that there counter over yonder,” then you might have some trouble when constructing a formal paragraph.

American English has become so diluted with slang and incorrect speech that many people – students, especially – are lost when it comes to correct grammar. If you say it one way, and write it another, then how can you possibly not be confused? Incorrect sentences often sound correct to the ear, but when written on paper, the mistakes are glaringly obvious from the page.

If you are in need of a quick grammatical tutorial, but don’t want to go to the trouble of reading an entire MLA handbook, then you will benefit from this article. Even those who think that they are on top of their grammatical errors might find something of interest, as the rules of American English are seemingly endless.

Parts of Speech

This is the easy part, but I thought that it should be included because it is the foundation for proper english. If you don’t know the parts of speech, then you cannot possibly string together a coherent sentence without making a few mistakes along the way.

Noun – This used to be classified as a person, place or thing, but ‘quality’ and ‘act’ have recently been included. EX: Alex (person), Boston (place), table (thing), kinship (quality) and execution (act).

Verb – A word or phrase that expresses action, existence, or occurences is a verb. EX: go, be, toss, came, hurtled, ran, left

Adjective – An adjective is defined as anything that describes a noun. EX: ugly, intelligent, peaceful, abundant)

Adverb – Similar to an adjective, an adverb describes (or modifies) a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Contrary to popular opinion, every adverb does not end in ly. EX: slowly, carefully, often, much)

Interjection – An interjection is any word, phrase, or sound description that is exclamatory and makes sense when used by itself. EX: Oh! ; Shoot! ; No way!

Conjunction – A word that is used to connect two other words or phrases is called a conjunction. EX: and, or, but, because

Preposition – This is a word that illustrates the association of a noun with a verb, an adjective, or another noun. EX: to, from, with, at, by

Article – One of three words used to signal the presence of a noun. EX: The (definite), a (indefinite), an (indefinite)

Pronoun – A word used in place of a noun that refers to a person, place, thing, idea, quality, or act. EX: she, the, it, they, them

Creating Sentences

Now that we understand the parts of a sentence, we can begin to create them. There are four main types of sentences:

1. Statements – Sentences that explain an action as a fact. EX: Sally went to the park.

2. Questions – Sentences that request information. EX: Did Sally go to the park?

3. Exclamations – Sentences that express surprise or indignation. EX: I can’t believe that Sally went to the park!

4. Commands – Sentences that solicit that actions of others, or demand that something happen. EX: Sally, don’t you dare go to the park.

When you create a sentence, you must be certain that the noun agrees with the verb, and that the entire sentence is written in the same tense.

Subject-Verb Agreement & Tense

Subject-verb agreement has to do with the placement of the verb and how it interacts with the noun. For example, the verb and the subject must agree in number if the verb illustrates a quantitative amount. You wouldn’t say that Fred are going to the store; you would say that Fred is going to the store. Similarly, they were leaving the store and Fred was leaving the store. You use different forms of the verb depending on whether one or many people were leaving the store.

This might seem rather simple, but there are several actions which are often misused in written English. For instance, neither is often thought of as a plural subject, but it should always be used with a singular verb: Neither of us is up to the task. The same is true for either. Another example is pair. The word sounds plural because it refers to two things, but together those objects make a pair, so you would say a pair of shoes is missing from my closet.

Tense refers to when an action too place: in the present (we walk); in the past (we walked); or the future (we will walk).

Modifiers

Modifiers can be adjectives, adverbs, nouns, or prepositions. There are two different types: words and phrases.

Adjectives are often used to define the object they modify. They are typically used directly before the noun, and serve to characterize or define it. For example, in the sentence You are a wonderful actor, ‘wonderful’ is used to modify ‘actor.’

Nouns can be used to modify other nouns, and are commonly overlooked because they seem to be part of the original noun. They also appear immediately before the noun, and are used to further define it. If you say I need to use the telephone booth, you are using ‘telephone’ to modify the word ‘booth.’ Since they are both nouns, you don’t necessarily think of one as the modifier of the other.

If two or more adjectives are used to modify a noun, they are separated by commas, such as in the sentence She had a cute, happy dog. If, however, both a noun and an adjective modify another noun, no comma is necessary. You would say That is a sturdy dog house when you are using both ‘sturdy’ and ‘dog’ to modify the word ‘house.’

A misplaced modifier happens when you use an adjective to modify the incorrect noun. For example, in the sentence Jessica was eating her lunch with a blue bracelet, the phrase ‘with a blue bracelet’ is modifying the word ‘lunch,’ when it is indended to modify ‘Jessica’. It should read Jessica was wearing a blue bracelet and eating her lunch.

Dangling modifiers are very similar, except that they misconstrue the meaning of a sentence rather than the subjects. If you say He nearly ate a whole plate of food, you are implying that he didn’t eat anything at all, but that he almost tackled that big plate of food. Instead, it should read He ate nearly a whole plate of food.

Punctuation

Terminating Punctuation

Terminating Punctuation refers to marks that end or complete a sentence. There are four types: periods, question marks, exclamation points, and ellipese.

A period (.) is the conclusion to a statement that does not ask a question or sound exclamatory. EX: Amy finished her homework.

A question mark (?) appears at the end of a sentence that asks a question. EX: Did Amy finish her homework?

An exclamation point (!) belongs at the end of a sentence that should convey excitement or indignation. EX: I can’t believe Amy hasn’t finished her homework!

An ellipsis (..) indicates that one or more words are missing from the end of a sentence, or that a character’s words have trailed off. EX: I wanted to finish my homework, but…

Pause Punctuation refers to marks that are used to indicate a pause in a sentence.

A comma (,) is used to separate two clauses in a sentence. EX: I wanted to go to the park, but I didn’t have time.

A semicolon is used to separate two complete sentences that rely on one another for explanation or definition. EX: I wanted to go to the park this afternoon; I hate being cooped up inside all day.

A colon represents the beginning of a list or explanation of the previous sentence. It isn’t typically considered “correct” in formal writing, but it is being used more and more often. EX: Molly wanted two things from her day off from work: a trip to the park and a nice long nap.

An ellipsis can also be used in pause punctuation to simulate the faltering or stuttering of dialogue. EX: I wanted…but I couldn’t…I didn’t have time…

Apostrophes and Quotation Marks

These are some of the most commonly misused forms of punctuation, mostly because the proper methods are not taught exclusively.

Apostrophes are used in both contractions and to show possession. If you want to shorten two words to make one word – as would not becomes wouldn’t – use an apostrophe to signal the contraction. If you need to show possession of a singular subject, add an ‘s to the end of the word. For example, Mr. Crawford’s students would not settle down. To show plural possession, simply add an apostrophe: The horsesmanes were gorgeous.

Single quotation marks should be used to indicate dialogue within dialogue. For instance, if your character is talking about what someone said to her, it might look like this:
Marcie was absolutely giddy with excitement. “I went downstairs to talk to Mom, and she said ‘yes’!”

Marcie’s words are in double quotation marks, while her mother’s words are in single quotation marks.

Typing Correctly

Now that you know a little bit more about grammar, we can move on to the actual typing of your paper, report, article, or story.

Depending on what you are writing, you will use different methods of structure. A letter to a friend will probably be written differently than a memo to your boss, just as a personal journal entry will look different than a professional article.

When writing in a professional capacity, these are the basic rules to follow:

1. Paragraphs

If you are writing a short story or a novel, or even a letter to a friend or aquaintance, it is acceptable to use the indentation method. Each time you begin a new paragraph, start the first sentence on a new line and indent the first word 4-6 spaces. Make sure that each paragraph is indented the same number of spaces, and that the next line begins at the far left margine.

Professional letters, articles, and other publications should be written using block paragraphs. There are no indentions in any part of the paper, and paragraphs are separated by an extra blank line.

2. Sentences

Sentences should always begin with a capital letter, and should begin one space after the terminating punctuation of the previous sentence. In other words, you should tape the spacebar once after entering your period, question mark, exclamation point, or ellipsis. Several years ago, it was expected that two spaces indicate the beginning of a new sentence, but that is not expected anymore.

3. References

If you need to reference a single line from another text, it is acceptable to do so in the same paragraph with the rest of your content. If, however, you need to reference more than two sentences, you should begin the reference two lines below your original paragraph, and indent it 1-2 inches on both sides.

4. Italics and Underlines

If you are quoting the title of an article, a short story, a poem, a song, or a one-act play, the title of the reference should be in italics. If you are writing longhand, then the title should be in “double quotations.”

If you are quoting the title of a book, a magazine, a newspaper, a full-length play, an epic poem, or an album, you need to underline the title.

Both italics and underlines are also used to emphasize a particular word or phrase. It is up to you which you would prefer to use, though the professional world is leaning toward italics.

This should answer many of your questions about common grammar. If you have any problems, or if you need more information, try one of the references I've listed along with this article.
